You can also look at the yearly statistics for dog maulings in the US. The most serious bites and maulings are by pit bulls. Practically 100% of maulings resulting in death are by pit bulls. And that's just when the victim is human.
DeleteI work in a vet's office and we have seen a marked increase in pit bull attacks that result in serious injury or death, and there's been so many, many times we've had to put dogs down because their wounds are so extensive and horrific that trying to help them just prolongs their suffering.
And every.single.pitbull.owner says the same fucking thing, "pittie was never aggressive, he was part of the family, we trained him so well, we were so vigilant". Meanwhile I have some poor dog's body cooling on my table, it's blood on my scrubs, the sounds of it trying to breathe through blood forever imprinted in my brain. And fucking idiot pit bull owner has the fucking gall to cry because their dog will be taken and likely put down.
This is fucking infuriating. Fuck pit bull owners and fuck poker faced too for being an apologist of these horrible dogs. I love all animals but what breeders have done with pit bulls is horrible and should have never been allowed.

Like pp said, these dogs were bred to be strong and agressive, to be able to match in strength and ferocity animals much larger than them. Some idiot person who doesn't understand this and sees the breed as unfairly maligned might get one, underestimate the dangers then lose a limb or child to the "sweetest baby ever".
And before you come at me, I've had pits. Before I had kids I had two and yes they were super sweet and cuddly until one snapped for no reason and I almost fucking died.
