DeleteThe "walking in traffic" comment made me laugh cause I've almost done just that many times in my life. And from memory, I have actually, definitely done it at least once in the past year. I know ADHD often sounds like a convenient excuse when you have no personal experience with it, but there's a reason it's associated to a shorter life expectancy. People with ADHD are likelier than average to die from accidental causes. I learned that my husband inadvertently conditioned himself to pay attention for me when we walk outside. I used to get pretty upset when he'd point out obvious obstacles, but looking black I understand how that became a habit for him. What's interesting for me is that he realized that he had the same reflexes with my dad (although he stops himself) because my dad is similarly clueless when he navigates an outdoor space. Whether that's an evidence of ADHD having a genetic component or just a proof that I got my habits from my dad, I can assure you that it's not something I'm able just to turn off or try harder at. I've gotten much better, but it took a lot of time, therapy, medication, and just being exposed to the same issues again and again over many years.

All the "ifs" and "buts" and trick scenarios you come up with just show that you think people with ADHD are just making excuses in order to inconvenience others. I can tell you that ADHD first and foremost negatively impacts the everyday life of the person who has it. I didn’t even know finance was commenting. Finance, I know we ADHD don’t do it purpose. Untreated it becomes so unbearable you don’t want to live anymore or do anything that you need to do. Luckily, there is help for us. We have options. There is no excuse after repeated leaving a stove on and repeated warnings and talking tos that a 20yo can’t get help and figure this out. It’s his choice. As a parent I wouldn’t enable it. I’d dismantle the stove while I was gone and he can’t cook for himself or he can move out. He hasn’t hit his rock bottom to take it serious enough IMO. If they are holding his hands, he won’t hit it. Sometimes we need that hard ass rock bottom.

I tell them all of the time that you have this set back, it’s real, here is help, this is what we can do, you’re doing this right now because of the ADHD but doesn’t make it your only option, don’t let it stop you from being successful with what you want to accomplish that day. Don’t make it a crutch. You have to work harder for day to day, don’t fight it, accept it, then treat it. I have plenty of my fuck it days and they do too and we allow those.
This is my opinion. It’s different than here. That doesn’t mean I don’t understand the struggle, I just approach it differently. I don’t even know that 20yo issues just that everyone was saying he has ADHD so he can’t help it. I am saying he can help it…with work. It takes work. So shoot me.

DeleteNot quite. It started because I answered Alysse when she repeatedly asked why no one was responding to Gabrelle's in the thread. I did say that I did not see the racism in the many link Gabrelle was posting because a lot of them appeared to have nothing to do with racism. Some were about sloppy looking for help to treating her kid's vitiligo, another about having a dream about her highschool ex, etc. I did misunderstood the screenshot of sloppy being racist, and when it was pointed out and I looked again, I got it, but at that point the whole thing had ballooned out of proportions.
I didn't have the context? No shit. That's why I was not reacting to Gabrelle in the first place. Until I started feeling bad for Alysse because she kept asking why no one was reacting and I felt that no one was responsible to her and I didn't want to just ignore her because I felt some kinship with her because we had talked about being black women. Unlike Gabrelle who I didn't know was Gabrelle under a new SN and didn't even know was black and not just doing the thing I had seen her do on the one other thread we interacted, where she brought up stuff from past thread (unrelated to race) to shut up a poster she disagreed with.

What I don't like is I get looked at like I am the devil because I am not that overweight, to them. I refuse to conform and be overweight to make them happy. I have been overweight, I wasn't happy, and I felt horrible. I lost 30lbs and feel way better, and I won't put it back on.
